Vegetable and grain amaranths represent a vital source of micronutrients and protein in Asia and Africa. However, various foliar lepidopteran pests and stem-mining weevils hinder amaranth production. Insect-resistant cultivars can enhance the productivity of this crop. Here, we report on the performances of amaranth varieties screened for their resistance to insect pests under the field conditions at The World Vegetable Center stations in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. We conducted two preliminary screening trials with a total of 263 entries from around the world in Taiwan and a third preliminary screening trial with 49 African-indigenous entries in Tanzania. Promising entries from these preliminary trials were collectively evaluated in an advanced screening trial in Tanzania, to identify lines resistant to foliar and stem-boring pests in East Africa. Four entries exhibited moderate resistance to foliar pests: TZ51 and TZ53 (Amaranthus cruentus), TZ34 (A. dubius) and TZ39 (Amaranthus sp.). Five entries showed moderate resistance to stem weevils: TZ06 and TZ27 (A. cruentus), TZ52 (A. graecizans), TZ59 (A. palmeri) and TZ07 (Amaranthus sp.). Lepidopteran pests affecting leaves were reared to adulthood and identified as Spoladea recurvalis (Crambidae), Spodoptera exigua (Noctuidae) and Spodoptera littoralis (Noctuidae). Stem weevil larvae were also reared and identified as: Neocleonus sannio Herbst, Gasteroclisus pr. rhomboidalis Boheman, Hypolixus pr. haerens Boheman and Baradine sp. (Curculionidae). These results highlight key amaranth pests in East Africa and identify insect-resistant entries that will be useful in breeding programmes and resistance studies.

The need to control multiple languages is thought to require domain-general executive control in bilinguals such that the executive control and language systems become interdependent. However, there has been no systematic investigation into how and where executive control and language processes overlap in the bilingual brain. If the concurrent recruitment of executive control during bilingual language processing is domain-general and extends to non-linguistic control, we hypothesize that regions commonly involved in language processing, linguistic control, and non-linguistic control may be selectively altered in bilinguals compared to monolinguals. A conjunction of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data from a flanker task with linguistic and non-linguistic distractors and a semantic categorization task showed functional overlap in the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) in bilinguals, whereas no overlap occurred in monolinguals. This research therefore identifies a neural locus of functional overlap of language and executive control in the bilingual brain.

Summary
INTRODUCTION
When passed in 1973, few lawmakers anticipated the firestorms that would surround the Endangered Species Act (ESA). The ESA epitomizes the classic quandary of diffuse social benefits and concentrated private costs. About half of the listed endangered species have 80 percent of their habitat on private land (see Brown and Shogren 1998; Innes, Polasky, and Tschirhart 1998), and many landowners complain that the costs of complying with the ESA are too great.
The lack of satisfactory answers to questions about fair compensation to landowners have helped stall the reauthorization of ESA since 1992. For example, the proposed listing of the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog as a “threatened species” typifies the controversy over how best to protect species at risk on private land. Environmentalists and biologists argue the prairie dog is a keystone species in Great Plains ecosystems. Prairie dogs provide prey for various species of raptors and black-footed ferrets, and they supply habitat for burrowing owls, spotted salamander, and mountain plover. Prairie dogs rework the soil to provide nutrients for plant growth of benefit to grazing animals (Whicker and Detling 1988).
But historically, ranchers and government agencies in many Western states like Wyoming and Montana have considered the prairie dog a pest. Many people believe that prairie dogs compete for livestock forage, create livestock hazards with their burrows, and increase soil erosion. For these reasons, ranchers and government agents have systematically reduced their populations.
